CURRENT AND PLANNED ACTIVITIES:

  • Classes and Training

      Elementary Chinese I

    A new language course, Elementary Chinese I (CN 101X, Course Reference Number: 26574), will be offered at Montgomery College, Rockville campus, in Fall 2001 as a component of the Education Department’s Title VI-A grant the College received to develop and internationalize the curriculum. Elementary Chinese I is a beginning language course focusing on the study of Chinese language and culture. Students will be trained in the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing and instruction will incorporate a variety of approaches. No prior knowledge of Chinese is required. The class will meet on Monday and Wednesday, 5:00 – 6:15 p.m. Three (3) college-level credits will be accrued upon satisfactory completion of the course and are transferable to other two-year or four-year institutions.       History of Asian Americans

    A new course on Asian Americans, History of Asian Americans (HS 137, Course Reference Number: 25811) will be offered by the History Department at Montgomery, Rockville campus, in Fall 2001. This is a general studies course and topics include Asian immigration under capitalism, discrimination and exclusion, resistance to oppression, new immigrants from Asia, and myth of the "model minority." The course meets the college's multicultural requirements and the credits accrued (3 credits) are transferable to other two-year or four-year institutions.     SAT Verbal  (12 x 2 hours)

    Instructor: Fairfax County Public School English teachers.

    This SAT verbal prep class focuses on strategies for test taking. Student will get familiar with powerful strategies and will learn all levels of English  vocabulary, reading comprehension,  grammar, listening comprehension, writing skills, and how to apply them in the real test. The types of problems in each of the three sections (Sentence Compilations, Analogies, Critical Reading and Vocabulary ) will be analyzed and the ways to crack them will be taught and practiced in 12-meeting classes.
    Mock tests will be given at the beginning, middle and the end of the course so  the students will be able to see their progress as well as their individual weakness.

      SAT Math Preparation (24 hours/each

    Instructor is a master in math.

    Helps prepare students to practice and  review all levels of math skills, and test-taking strategies for the SAT Introduction to SAT MATH; Average, Mean, Mode and Frequency , Ratio; Exponent, Roots, Probability and Combination; Factoring polynomial;  Midterm, equations. Quadratic  Equations, Function; Inequality, line; Triangle, Trigonometric; Circle; Quadrilaterals, Boxes and cans, coordinate geometry; Quantitative comparison / Final test

    Accent Modification

    Language and articulation for individuals of any age--improve pronunciation, articulation, inflection, understanding of idioms and English expressions. It will help the students to see their progress as well as their individual weakness. Classes are to start on Sunday, February 3 afternoon (depends on the participation).  This course is focused on:

       English Consonants and Vowels from A to Z  
       Plosive Consonants and Front Vowels
       Fricative Consonants and Back Vowels
       Affricative and Nasal Consonants and Central Vowels
       Glides(Semivowels) and Diphthongs

    About the instructor of "Accent Modification" - Gwendolyn E. Talbot holds a Master of Arts Degree from the University of Arizona in Speech Language Pathology .  She is an excellent   professional  language Pathologist and Public School English/ Speech  Instructor and has worked in the field since 1969. She has been president and CEO of Speech Pathology Consultant Services, P.C. in Manassas, Va. since 1975.  She also works for the Manassas City Public as a Speech Pathologist for Junior and Senior High Schools. She is a Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) and in 1995 received the highest award offered by Toastmasters International, A Presidential
    Citation

    English Writing Skills

    Instructor has Certificate for teaching.

    This class focuses on Writing with Style: writing for school and everyday life-- to help students improve their overall writing ability through a variety of strategies -- topic of a paragraph, sentence and words, improve grammar,  syntax, punctuation, organization and reading comprehension;  resume, business and personal letter, essay, term paper writing , book report writing and more.
